Class 1 Restricted to Pintle Hook, Tag Along or Pole Trailer

A driver who would like to obtain a Class 1 Restricted Licence is not required to take New Brunswick’s MELT program.

  • Pass the Class 1 knowledge and road tests.

Out of Province Class 1 drivers with MELT

A driver who obtained a Class 1 licence in a MELT jurisdiction will be eligible to receive a Class 1 licence in New Brunswick, subject to meeting residency and other existing requirements.

Canadian / U.S. jurisdictions without MELT programs

Drivers with a Class 1 driver’s licence for more than 24 months

If you have held a Class 1 driver’s licence from another Canadian/U.S. jurisdiction for more than 24 months, you are not required to take New Brunswick’s MELT program.

Drivers with a Class 1 driver’s licence for 12 to 24 months

If you have held a Class 1 driver’s licence from another Canadian/U.S. jurisdiction for 12 to 24 months, you can choose to:

  • Pass the Class 1 knowledge and road tests.
    • You will have two attempts to complete these tests. If you are not successful, you must complete MELT program.
  • complete the MELT Program and take the Class 1 knowledge and road tests.

Drivers with a Class 1 driver’s licence for less than 12 months

If you have held your Class 1 driver’s licence from another Canadian/U.S. jurisdiction for less than 12 months, you must complete MELT Program prior to taking the class 1 knowledge and road tests.

Non-Residents from other countries with reciprocity

Non-residents from other countries who have held Class 1 licence for more than 24 months can choose to:

  • Pass the Class 1 knowledge and road tests.
    • You will have two attempts to complete these tests. If you are not successful, you must complete MELT program.
  •  complete the MELT Program and take the Class 1 knowledge and road tests.

Non-residents from other countries who have held Class 1 licence for less than 24 months must complete MELT.

Non-Residents from other countries without reciprocity

Non-residents from other countries must take a full driver licence examination which includes a vision test, a written examination, and a road test for their class 5 licence prior to testing for their class 1. Clients will be required to provide proof of how long they have held a class 1 licence in their country.

Non-residents from other countries who have held Class 1 licence for more than 24 months can choose to:

  • Pass the Class 1 knowledge and road tests.

CLASS 1 HOURLY TRUCK TRAINING for those EXEMPT from New Brunswick’s Class 1E MELT Program: 

Course Duration:

  • 4 Hour Practical Sessions per day (8am – 12pm or 12:30pm – 4:30pm)
  • Hours of training are dependent on the student’s previous experience, ability and class of licence upgrading to and how quickly a person progresses.

Course Cost:

  • $135.00/hr plus HST if applicable

Class 1 Manual:

  • 8 – 25 Hours (includes 1 Road Test attempt with Service New Brunswick)
  • Practical Training includes pre-trip inspection, coupling, uncoupling, backing, rural, urban and highway driving in preparation for the road test at Service New Brunswick.

Class 1 Automatic:

  • 8 – 25 Hours (includes 1 Road Test attempt with Service New Brunswick)
  • Practical Training includes pre-trip inspection, coupling, uncoupling, backing, rural, urban and highway driving in preparation for the road test at Service New Brunswick.

Class 1 Prerequisites:

  • 18 Years of Age
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence
  • Completed NB Medical Fitness Report (click for form)

Versatile Training Solutions Ltd. will be responsible for booking your road test at Service New Brunswick and scheduling your training at a mutually convenient time.  This cannot be done until you have completed your medical fitness report and written tests with the Driver Examiner. (road test fee of $57.50 must be paid to Service New Brunswick by the student prior to the road test).
